Printing with the old student cards in the labs
Most Labs are equipped with printers. When you log on to the network, one of these printers is automatically assigned to your computer.
Colour Printers are located in some of the Open Access labs. The lasers will produce a high quality output; printing on the lasers is charged on a per page basis through the use of a card reader.
The costs per sheet is: $.10 for black & white and $.20 for Colour Printing.
NO CASH REFUNDS ARE GIVEN ON YOUR STUDENT ID CARD FOR ANY REASON
Please do not put a cash value on your card of more than $5.00.
If you experience problems with your card we can have the amount lost re-initialized up to $5.00. Please see a Lab Monitor in one of the Open Access labs to fill out a voucher for you. Once it is filled out you can take the voucher to the Info Centre and they will re-initialize your card with the amount lost or re-issue you another Student ID Card with the amount lost.
Changing Printers
You may change the default printer assigned to your station (e.g. if it is not working). In the back-boned (networked) labs the printer selection is accomplished within Windows. The printer can usually be selected in the individual software's print option. To do so:
- Choose File | Print... from within the application.
- You will be presented with the Print dialog box.
- Your print request (print job) will be sent to the printed listed in the Name: field.
- To choose a different printer click on the drop down box (down arrow) of the Name: field then select the desired printer.
Using Laser Printers in Class
IIT (Instructional Information Technology, a subcommittee of AOT) previously decided that labs would be equipped with pay-per-use lasers, which would be 'free' for students during class time. They suggested the following process to effect this change.
- After class, the students will use their own ID cards to pay for laser print-outs at $0.10 per page (as they do now in the open access labs).
- During class, faculty will have a special card 'prefilled' with a cash value; they can insert this card in the card reader to allow students to print 'free' laser quality copies as required by the professor during class time.
Deleting Print Jobs
At the pay-per-page lasers, you may check the status of jobs in the queue by using the microcomputer close to the laser, which runs the QVIEW software. You can delete a print job with QVIEW by selecting it with the mouse (one click) and pressing the delete key.
Printing Problems
If the print jobs you send are appearing in the queue but are not being printed:
- Check that the printer is on and displays "Ready" in the LCD.
- If the LCD displays anything other than "Ready" contact the Service Desk @ ext. 7642.
Faculty Printing Information
ITT (Instructional Information Technology, a sub-committee of AOT) decided that labs would be equipped with pay-per-use lasers, which would be "free" for students during class time. They suggested the following process to effect this change.
- After class, the students will use their own id cards to pay for laser printouts at $0.10 per page (as they do now in the open access labs).
- During class, faculty will have a special card "pre-filled" with a cash value; they can insert this card in the laser to allow students to print "free" laser quality copies as required by the professor during class time.
- Laser printers are much more costly to supply and maintain than dot matrix printers.
- We must share actual costs for paper, cartridges, and maintenance via departmental budgets.
- Faculty will therefore want to use the cards judiciously, and remember that students do also have their own cards.
- Divisional offices will order as many cards from I.T.S. as they believe will be required initially for their faculty.
- I.T.S. will pre-fill faculty cards for 500 printed pages.
- To enable departments to track individual faculty use of cards and to allocate costs to program areas, I.T.S. will NOT provide any faculty with cards directly - they must obtain them from divisional offices.
- Divisional offices should return the cards to I.T.S. when empty or when re-ordering, and we will recycle them.

Wireless Printing
Wireless printing is now available at the College. For students you will be able to send your print jobs to the Open Access Labs, Library and Classrooms that have network printers with Qview stations and Card readers attached. Please see the instructions below on how to add a printer wirelessly. Here is the list of the shared printer names, what they print, room and campus location.
